In the Know: Turf Conversion
It must be June because here at AME Landscape Companies, we are again talking about the benefits of converting turf areas to mixed landscape plantings. Summer’s warm temperatures are the perfect time to kill off existing Bermuda grass. Converting turf areas save money, water and energy, while reducing landfill waste and the need for fertilizers and herbicides. There are many Maricopa county municipalities that offer turf reduction incentives to not only homeowners but to also commercial property owners. These rebate programs have been established to reduce the consumption of potable water within the landscape.
Turf Reduction Programs typically require at least 1,000 square feet of turf to be removed and renovated with installations of low water use plant materials. The existing lawn irrigation is also required to be modified to a drip system. Rebates can be up to $3,000 per property and appear as credits on your water bill. Properties that reduce turf will not only save money on their water bill and landscape maintenance costs but now may benefit from these various turf reduction rebate programs. There should be no concern that conversion of once green lawn areas will result in boring or barren landscapes as there are hundreds of low water use plants that can bring color and beauty to the desert landscape.
