In the Know: The Importance of Replacing Missing Trees

In the Know: The Importance of Replacing Missing Trees

Phoenix metro area cities have been cracking down on commercial properties that are missing trees from their original approved landscape drawings. Red flags are sent up when parking lot islands and areas adjacent city sidewalks are missing trees.  Most local cities including Tempe, Scottsdale and Phoenix all have ordinances in place that require trees to be replaced.  Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Tree shade helps mitigate the urban heat island.  Shading can reduce peak summer temperatures by 2 to 9 degrees.  These numbers are significant when thinking about walking across a treeless asphalt parking lot during a Phoenix summer.
  • Improved quality of life: trees have scenic value for our cities, provide habitat for many species and play a role in urban noise reduction.
  • Tree shade can slow deterioration of pavement and reduce maintenance.
  • Trees enhance storm water management & water quality by using and filtering rainwater that would normally become storm water runoff.
  • Trees improve air quality & lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Trees, when located strategically, can reduce energy use by shading buildings.

Tree replacement requirements are here to stay.  Providing for missing tree replacement in annual budgets is a pre-emptive way to allow for the inevitable.  Contact AME Landscape Companies and we can discuss a strategy to phase in replacement trees.
