In the Know: February 2015
February is an excellent month to start a vegetable garden. Research demonstrates gardening is good for the mind and body! This is just one of the reasons that vegetable gardening has become increasingly popular. Besides providing fresh, better tasting produce, these gardens also save money. The average gardener spends $70 a year on a vegetable garden but grow about $600 worth of vegetables. When locating your garden, keep in mind that most edible plants require at least six hours of sun per day. It is best to select a spot that has protection from late afternoon summer sun. Eradicate all weeds and grasses from your new garden prior to incorporating organic compost into the soil. Till the compost down to at least a 4” depth. Our tough desert soils make gardening easier in raised beds. If you are new to vegetable gardening, it is recommended to start with a small area and expand as you become more knowledgeable. This way you will avoid being overwhelmed and enjoy the pleasure of gardening!
